WILKIE - After an absence of a few years from high school football, the Wilkie Broncs brought it big on their season opener on home field Sept. 9. Defeating the Kindersley Kobras in a 39-36 victory was a great way to kick off their season.
The Broncs scored the first touchdown of the game. Kindersley took a 7-6 lead early in the second quarter, but the Broncs busted back with a successful running play that put them up 12-8. However, before the first half was over, Kindersley, barely crossing the plain, came back to lead 14-12 with three minutes left in the second quarter.
The Broncs were trailing and plugged in a running TD and a convert to take the lead 19-14 before the half was over. The team continued their offensive strength and added yet another TD to make a 25-14 half-time score.
A fake reverse in the first drive of the second half resulted in a TD and PAT, continuing the Broncs lead. However, a slight miscue in the Broncs defence led to a 70-yard run for a Kobra TD, lessening the Broncs lead. McLurg continued to plow down the field to retain their lead.
The Kobras tried repeatedly to make their mark on the field but the Broncs defended their home turf successfully to retain the win in this opener.
“Obviously we were happy with the outcome of the game after not 小蓝视频 in the league for several years," Coach Greg Mamer says.
"We know we have some good athletes, but are short on numbers and it showed, especially in the second half. I’m so proud of all of our players and the way we stuck together at the end. We definitely have some things to work on and are looking forward to getting back to practice next week.”
