Sifto employees, members of the Unity Local of the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union were back on the job Dec. 14, after having been on strike since Dec. 1. The new contract provided for a total average wage increase of 87¢ an hour over 30 months. Bob Burns, president of the Local, expressed appreciation to the town in general for maintaining a calm attitude throughout.

On behalf of the Unity Lions, Jake Nickel, president, thanked the community for supporting fundraising events such as a turkey shoot, nut drive, various raffles, a bike-a-thon and Christmas tree sales. As well as making donations to organizations, the Lions were purchasing fruit baskets for patients who would be in Unity Union Hospital Christmas Day.

Senlac Curling Club was advertising a Boxing Day dance to be held in the Senlac Hall. Admission was $2 a person and music would be provided by Ackerman’s Orchestra.

Cut Knife teacher and vice-principal Paul Runalls had his CD, Songs From My Head! – 17 original songs for children – chosen for CBC Galaxie’s Top Ten list.

Leading Seaman Brendon Warwaruk, on leave from HMCS Algonquin, made presentations about his work in the navy to Unity schools during a pre-Christmas leave. He and parents Peter and Anita celebrated an early Christmas as Brendon would be back on board ship by Christmas Day.

Grade 4 student at St. George School, Robert Cey, answered “I would get him a weight loss kit because he’s so fat,” when asked what he would get Santa for Christmas.
