UNITY — A former Unity resident has published a book.
“Go with Me on This” is a memoir that chronicles the life and 24-year broadcasting career of Troy Schaab.
Troy, son of Vern and Sharon Schaab of Unity, attended St. Peter’s School and later Unity Composite High School until Grade 10. He then moved to North Battleford, attending John Paul II Collegiate while he played hockey.
Following graduation from JPII in 1991, Schaab pursued post-secondary education in January of 1992 at Western Academy Broadcasting College in Saskatoon, followed by an internship at SUN 102 FM in Saskatoon.
The back cover of his book says “After sending out hundreds of demos after graduation, he had yet to hear back from a single station. With sheer luck and determination to make it in the field, he lucked out and began interning at various stations.”
Schaab tells the Unity-Wilkie Press-Herald and SASKTODAY.ca that in May of 2021, with the assistance of Friesen Press, he set out to become an author, writing his memoir. The book was released in October of 2002 and Schaab says he is currently working on marketing the book.
“I'm so fortunate to have had a career that offered so many experiences and opportunities. Putting these memories on paper was a fun exercise, and although the memoir heavily highlights the ups and downs of my days in the broadcasting industry, the book also delivers a message of resilience, by way of putting trust in your goals and dreams. So, there's a real ‘underdog’ element to the book as well.”
The book is available for sale in Unity to promote local shopping and to make it readily available to those who may have known him as he grew up in the community. The sales from Our Drug Store are earmarked for donation to Unity’s Secret Santa campaign.
Schaab says he could talk for hours on the benefits of growing up in a community like Unity. He says he hopes he was able to properly paint that picture in his book.
“Go with Me on This” can be purchased online and is also available as an audiobook narrated by himself.
Troy resides in Calgary, Alta. with his wife and partner of 26 years, Sonia, and their two kids, Nakita and Bryce. "Go With Me on This" is his first book.
The book’s website, states, “Troy Schaab’s adventurous memoir ‘Go with Me on This’ is about how the once unlucky radio school graduate became the owner of his own radio company … romping memoir of a Canadian farm boy who forged an extraordinary career in radio.”
