Dear Editor
I have several questions regarding our proposed new hire 鈥淧ublic Relations/ Intergovernmental Manager.鈥 My first reaction was 鈥淵ou鈥檝e got to be kidding,鈥 however I got past that first shock so here are my questions and concerns.
a) What section of the city budget will this person鈥檚 salary be coming out of?
b) 鈥淏oost business and economic development鈥 We have several on city payroll whose responsibility it was said to promote the city and its place in the sun.
Example:
- Legislative Services
- Director of Corporate Services and Planning
c) 鈥淲ork to improve cities image鈥 If the city is having a problem with its public image, should the city administration look inward and ascertain who is not carrying their load.
d) Adding another body to the executive class will achieve little to nothing if those who already in a position to carry a load are not carrying it.
e) When I arrived at 11 a.m. January 2, 1962, the city鈥檚 population was approximately 10,000. Currently I understand it to be slightly less then 15,000. In the meantime, the city鈥檚 administration footprint both physically and staff has multiplied five-fold. It is no wonder why the City of North Battleford is one of the most expensive cities in Western Canada to do business.
May I suggest your proposal to hire a 鈥淧ublic Relations / Intergovernmental Manager鈥 is an expensive drain we can scarcely afford.
