As cases of COVID continue to climb in every constituency (how’s that for featuring the letter “cee” in my opening statement), I am finding it more difficult this week to find a bit of humour for this column. Add to that chore (note: there’s another couple of “cees”), I’m trying hard to sort through and discard books and other materials. I really don’t want to leave that job to our kids once we depart this life.
This morning I found several items I either forgot or in one case, didn’t even realize I had. The former was a scholarly tome I was able to pass on to dear friends and the second, sitting in front of me now, a book titled: “The 776 Even Stupider Things Ever Said” (Ross and Kathryn Petras). I glanced through it and came up with several sayings and ideas that I trust will bring a grin, if not a smile, to your face. Here goes:
“This is unparalyzed in the state’s history.” (Said Gib Lewis, speaker of the Texas House and quoted by Molly Ivins in the New York Times Magazine.) While this book was published in 1994, I have no idea when Lewis goofed.
One more: “Teeth extracted by the latest Methodists.” (Ad for a dentist in Hong Kong)
Funny, really stupid or otherwise, these days we need to turn our attention from the challenges and discouragements we face on a daily basis; for most people, I assume, the isolation and health concerns need to be replaced with good news.
“… God has said, ‘I will never fail you.I will never abandon you.’” Hebrews 13:5
Originating from God Himself and applicable to every age and in every circumstance, we’re invited to commit our ways into His keeping.
Oh yes, stay safe, calm and kind and obey authorities, (Romans 13)
