Not skill or size, but God's will

Ed, my neighbor next door, loves to hunt. Each fall he makes his famous deer sausage, as long as he shoots a deer. I told Ed that it seems to me he has the advantage, since he has a rifle and the deer have none.

Ed, my neighbor next door, loves to hunt. Each fall he makes his famous deer sausage, as long as he shoots a deer. I told Ed that it seems to me he has the advantage, since he has a rifle and the deer have none.

Ed rightly says the rifle doesn't matter unless the person with it can shoot it well. "It is a matter of skill or marksmanship that the deer have to fear," Ed explained.

That sure is the truth, because if I had a rifle the deer would still be safe unless they were two feet away and showing a signed affidavit that they really, really wanted to die.

Hunting has been, since the dawn of history, a common means of providing food and other necessities of life for human 小蓝视频s. The Bible speaks of the sling, one of the ancient weapons used for hunting and in battle. The sling was a projectile weapon used to throw a blunt weapon, often stones or lead pellets. The sling had a small pouch or cradle in the middle of two lengths of cord. A stone or lead pellet was placed in the pouch. With both cords held in hand, the sling was swung and one of the two cords was released. The stone not only flew far and fast, it could hit a target with deadly accuracy.

In the Bible, we are told David, a young shepherd lad, was able to knock down the giant Goliath with his sling. David made it plain he was fighting against Goliath for mocking the God of Israel. David had lots of practice with his sling, as it was a common weapon of shepherds.

Ancient writers repeatedly stressed the advantage of the sling's use in battle. Regular soldiers carried slings and the armies had groups or divisions of slingers. As a weapon, the sling was light to carry and cheap to produce, ammunition in the form of stones was readily available.

Perhaps in the deer hunting season it might be a good exercise to think of how the deer feel when they are hunted. It is much better to be the hunter than the hunted. The Bible tells us the devil is always on the hunt to bring us down by temptation and sin. Sadly, he hopes to destroy us.

When Jesus was tempted by the devil in the desert to turn stones into bread he said, "Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." Jesus had the weapon of God's word with him at all times. With it he defeated temptations.

The word of God is to be our weapon of choice, because the devil is out to attack us. God's word is truth to be buckled around our waist. It is a protecting breastplate, peace to fit our feet in readiness and a shield to cover us. It is a sword to cut through the attacks of the devil against us. We dare not be caught without it.
