HAFSTEIN: Gudmunder (Mindy) Hafstein July 23, 1911 - June 13, 2011 Gudmunder Bjorgvin Hafstein (Mindy), of Peace River, Alberta, passed away on Monday, June 13, 2011 in the Grimshaw/Berwyn & District Continuing Care Unit at the age of 99. Born on his family's homestead 23 miles north of Maidstone, Saskatchewan to Gudrin & Sophanias Hafstein, Mindy grew up farming cattle and grain, and later married, established his own farm 4 miles west of Maidstone, and worked that farm until his retirement in the mid 1970's. As a youth, Mindy played "shinny" on local ponds and attended community dances for recreation. Curling, Saturday night movies, and hockey games in town took their place once he became a family man. While he was on the farm, fishing with his friends at Loon Lake, Saskatchewan was as close as he got to a vacation, so he embraced it by parking a trailer out there, which meant his family could enjoy lake activities with him. Once Mindy retired, he had time to pursue his interest in "rock-hounding", becoming an award winning jewellery-maker and highly skilled silversmith. He and Annie, his wife of 63 years, also enjoyed winters in Quartzsite, Arizona and travelling throughout North America, making many friends along the way. Mindy and Annie chose to reside in Lloydminster, Alberta after leaving the farm, and when Mindy reached the 90-year mark in 2001, they moved to Peace River, Alberta to be near family. Annie was laid to rest in Peace River in December, 2003 at the age of 87. Mindy is survived by his daughter Beverly Pichette; his grandson Dean Ingrey (wife Carla); his granddaughter Carole Gold (husband Charles); his great grandchildren April Gold (great, great grandchildren Laina and Riley), Brandt Gold, Derrick Gold, and Dylan Ingrey; his sister Mable Stewart; and several nieces, nephews, & their descendants. Mindy was predeceased by his beloved wife Annie and his siblings Emily Bell, Margaret Birlingham, John Hafstein and Alla Halterman. The funeral service was held in Peace River at the Chapel of Memories at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 17, 2011. If you wish, memorial donations to the Alberta Heart & Stroke Foundation may be made as expressions of sympathy. ____________________________________________________
