CUNNINGHAM: In Loving Memory of Douglas James Cunningham who was born October 16, 1920 at Regina, SK and passed away July 1, 2011 at North Battleford, SK. Douglas J. Cunningham and Muriel Parnaby were married June 11, 1945 at Leeds, England. Doug is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Muriel ; his loving children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Doug Jr. (Wilma) Cunningham, Nanaimo. BC: Carey (Ken) ~ Kiana, Liam, Emma; Catherine (Peter), Jennifer (Brendan); Gillian (Jim) Cooper, North Battleford, SK: Heath (Janelle) ~ Brady, Sydney, Kayli; Hal (Jen); Janice (Lyle) Trost, North Battleford, SK: Nicole (Cliff), Mac; Don (Karen) Cunningham, Regina, SK: Kendra, Matthew; Sean Cunningham, Saskatoon, SK and Linda (Bob) Cunningham, Regina, SK; his brother Jack (Marion) Cunningham, Regina, SK ; brother-in-law, Len Keeper as well as nieces and nephews. Doug was predeceased by his parents, James & Gladys Cunningham; parents-in-law, Alfred & Edith Parnaby; twin brother, Glen Cunningham, sisters-in-law: Henrietta Cunningham and Irene Keeper. A "Celebration of Life" was held Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at St. George's Anglican Church, Battleford, SK with The Rev. Peter Norman officiating. Shared Memories were given by Doug Cunningham Jr and Pictorial by Kendra Cunningham. Gifts of Music were shared by Organist, Irene Garrett; Soloist, Nicole Schwartz. The Scripture Readers were Carey Fleming and Doug Cunningham Jr and Prayer by Janice Trost. Veteran Honors and Honor Guard were present with Branch # 9, Royal Canadian Legion, Battleford, SK. The Urn Bearers were Mac Trost, Heath Cooper, Matthew Cunningham and Hal Cooper. Memorials are requested to The Auxiliary ~ River Heights Lodge, 2001 - 99th St, North Battleford, SK S9A 0S3. Interment will take place at a later date at The Town Battleford Cemetery, Battleford, SK. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Battlefords Funeral Service. 446-4200 Doug's History Doug and his twin-brother Glen were born Oct. 16, 1920 to James & Gladys Cunningham in Regina, SK. They were joined by younger brother Jack (John). Doug and his brothers attended school in Regina. Doug worked for a short time before joining the RCAF in 1940. He was trained as an airframe mechanic and was sent overseas in 1944. Doug was posted in Yorkshire, England where he met Muriel Parnaby. They were married June of 1945 just before Doug was sent back to Canada. Muriel followed a year later. Doug went to work for PFRA in Moose Jaw while waiting for Muriel to join him. They then moved to Regina where Doug worked for Ford Motor Company. Through his work on the road he heard of an opening with Victory Motors in North Battleford. He moved Muriel and children, Doug, Gill, Jan & Don to North Battleford. After several years with Victory Motors, Doug opened his own business ~ Texaco Star Service Station. After the Service Station, Doug worked with Battleford Furniture and retired to his Antique Shop in Battleford. During the Service Station years, the family added a son, Sean and daughter, Linda, and had moved to Battleford to live. Doug and Muriel resided in Battleford until Doug went to live at The Battlefords District Care Centre at then to River Heights LodgeMuriel joined him there 2 years ago. Doug enjoyed many extra activities. He was a member of the Optimist Club, Founding member of Historic Battleford Lion Club, on the Planning Committee for 1984 Summer Games in North Battleford, an early member of Battle River Bowman as coach, team manager and looked after equipment. He loved fishing and hunting, carpentry and re-doing antiques.
