Martial artist Emily Schaan of Young earned a silver medal in judo at the Canada Winter Games last Thursday, taking second place in the women's 57-63 kg category. The 17-year-old Schaan advanced to the gold medal match with a 7-0 win over an Alberta competitor in the semi-finals. She lost to a Quebec opponent in the gold medal match.
Schaan was one of three athletes from Young competing in judo at the Games, which took place in Halifax, N.S. Feb. 11-27. All three brought home medals.
Fellow Youngster Warren Seib, 18, also fought his way to a silver medal, besting all but one opponent in the male under-60kg category. Seib's competition took place on Feb. 23. He lost his gold medal match 10-0 to Nova Scotia representative Dylan Landry.
Seventeen-year-old Nicole Dyck had to fight three opponents in the preliminary round alone to earn her way to a bronze medal finish at the Games. Dyck won two of those preliminary fights to finish second in her pool, losing only to the eventual gold medal winner from Quebec. She lost her semi-final match to a B.C. competitor, thereby knocking her out of gold medal contention. But her showing throughout the tournament was enough to give her third place.
In other events, 15-year-old Tara Hancherow of Tisdale wound up fourth in women's novice figure skating. Hancherow stood third after the short program, but fell just shy of a medal despite a solid performance in the freeskate.
Humboldt's Andrew Benning placed fifth in the men's five-kilometre sit-ski competition on Feb. 24, completing the mass-start race in a time of 24:45.60. He wound up seventh overall in the 800m sprint on Feb. 22, and was ninth in the men's 2.5 km (interval start) event on Feb. 21, finishing with a time of 10:53.10.
Wyatt Cowell of Star City and Jocelyn LeBlanc of Tisdale teamed up for a very respectable seventh-place finish in the Ice Dance Pre-Novice Mix category. The duo had a fifth-place showing in the pattern two dance (tango), and were seventh in both the pattern one dance (foxtrot) and free dance. Pattern dances were held Feb. 21, with the free dance going Feb. 23.
Drew Nevland of Birch Hills wound up seventh overall in target shooting (air pistol). He teamed up with Jeremy Gyoerick of Prince Albert to take sixth spot in the team competition.
In alpine skiing, Aberdeen's Ty Leger was 24th in the men's super-combined event, clocking in with times of 0:56.41 and 0:48.01. He was 26th in the giant slalom, posting runs of 1:04.00 and 1:03.32. He did not finish either of his runs in the men's slalom.
