Watrous baseball great heads to Hall of Fame

Aug. 21, Douglas Schultz of Watrous, one of Saskatchewan is most dedicated baseball personalities from over four decades will be inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame.

Schultz was born in 1954 in Regina and is the oldest of four siblings.

From the early 1960s to 2009 Schultz contributed to baseball in the capacities as a player, manager, coach, volunteer, umpire and executive league president.

His love for baseball took off at the age of seven when he began Sandlot baseball in Duval.

In 1961 Schultz was a member of the league championship team and was a provincial finalists.

Schultz went on to win a Mountain Baseball League Championship at the peewee, bantam and midget levels and a provincial title while playing bantam baseball.

At 15, he played high school baseball for Strasbourg, midget baseball for Duval and senior for Strasbourg. The high school team were the champions of Last Mountain School Division.

At 18, he was invited to a Montreal Expos camp and then invited to another more intense evaluation camp, but declined in favour of farming.

From 1969 to '88 he played senior baseball for Duval, in the Qu'appelle Valley Baseball League.

Schultz helped his team win one league title while taking second place at provincials once. As for individual awards Schultz was named the league's All-Star Left Fielder for four straight seasons and was the league's all-star catcher once.

Schultz played senior ball in Strasbourg after his career with Duval until 1995. He was player/manager for five seasons and won the league championship each of those five seasons with one provincial title.

He also joined the Regina Ghosts at the World Senior Tournament in Phoenix for two years.

After moving to Watrous following the provincial title, Schultz joined the Watrous senior team for three seasons.

Along with some senior baseball, Schultz was also involved in twilite baseball with Lanigan, winning the A, B and C division once.

In 1996 and '97, he played with the Lumsden Ghosts at the Twilite Western Canadian Championships in Kindersley and won his first time there.

Last year, Schultz received the 20 Year Participation Award for his dedication to baseball.

Along with his great play and managing of senior and twilite baseball, Schultz coached minor baseball for 10 years, assisted at a baseball camp and served as president of the Qu'appelle Valley Senior Baseball League and the Long Lake Minor Baseball League.

Schultz was touted as the catcher having the strongest arm at every level he played.

He also participated in fastball, curling and broomball and was active in the community with the church, the Optimist Club, the Kinsmen Club and the Duval Community Rink Association.

He was a director of the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum from 2001 to '07.

Schultz and his wife Annette continue to live in Watrous.
