Hockey has been over in the Battlefords for months, but for many it is not forgotten. It seems every week a new story comes up about local players and once again that was the case last week, as the SHA released the list of names for the Top 40 camp July 18 to 22 in Wilcox.
Three Battlefords Midget Stars were named to the 1995-born roster of Saskatchewan players. Each year 15- and 16-year-old players from Saskatchewan gather during the summer to try to impress scouts and continue to make a name for themselves in the hockey world.
Eric Pfeifer of North Battleford was a rookie defenceman who notched a goal and six assists with the Stars last season in 35 games in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League. The Prince Albert Raiders drafted Pfeifer last summer after playing with the Battlefords Bantam AA Barons. Pfeifer was one of 12 defenceman his age selected to the Top 40 camp after impressing at the SaskFirst Tournament in March.
Along with Pfeifer, defenceman Robin Yew was also named to the 1995-born Top 40 roster. Yew played 39 games notching two goals and three assists in his rookie season with the Stars.
Twin brother Regan Yew, a forward was also named to the Top 40 roster. Regan was drafted 160th overall by the Prince Albert Raiders in the 2010 WHL bantam draft. Last season, his first with the Battlefords Stars, Regan had three goals and 10 assists in 42 games.
Regan and Robin were both on the Saskatchewan Team, which won the National Aboriginal Hockey Championship April 26 to 30.
Other players from the area were named to the 1996-born Top 40 list. Kendall Fransoo of North Battleford, who played Bantam AAA hockey in Notre Dame, was one of 12 defenceman selected.
Carter Amson, of Radisson, who played in Martensville, was selected for a forward position. The Lethbridge Hurricanes drafted Amson this spring in the WHL bantam draft.
