June 21 marked the first day of summer and during the short summer season residents of the Battlefords and area are drawn to the shores of Jackfish Lake. While the lake is a far cry from the deep blue, many may be pleasantly surprised to learn how many sailors earn their sea legs only 40km north west of the Battlefords.
Nestled along the shores of Jackfish Lake, the small lake village of Meota is home to the Battlefords Sailing Club. Battlefords Sailing Club members can be found taking advantage of the wind and sun throughout the spring, summer, and in some cases well into the fall.
The Battlefords Sailing Club is always accepting new members and offers a number of valuable benefits. The first major benefit is access to the organization's clubhouse. The clubhouse is equipped with a kitchen, a common area, a large deck overlooking the lake, washrooms with showers and access to club boats.
For those who are not sailors, memberships also include access to four club owned kayaks. Every year the club hosts a sailing school, which is delivered by certified instructors. Lessons take place for half-days over one week and provide students with a chance to learn the basics of sailing. This year's sailing lessons will be July 25 to 29. The cost will be $195. Those interested in taking lessons are encouraged to contact Shane at 445-2900.
Sailing is versatile sport suitable for all ages and skill levels. Nothing compares to the feeling of harnessing the power of the wind while you glide along the surface of the water with nothing but the sound of the water lapping at the sides of your boat. As a side note, once one learns some of the sailing terminology it becomes apparent how much of our daily vocabulary is influenced by sailing terminology.
The Battlefords Sailing Club is a non-profit volunteer driven organization. Members of the club contribute to the maintenance of the organization by paying a small membership fee and volunteering their time at fundraising events. The club also derives some revenue from the rental of the Club House which is a nice location for holding small receptions and gatherings. New members pay $120 if they join before Aug. 1 and $80 dollars after the deadline.
This season's special event is the Western Masters Regatta which takes place July 23 and 24.
Sailing School operates from July 25 to 29 with classes СÀ¶ÊÓƵ offered both in the morning and in the evening to accommodate most schedules.
