The rumours floating area the local hockey circles have finally been put to rest. As the Saskatchewan Prairie Hockey League prepares for its second season, the number of teams could potentially double.
At a recent league meeting it was confirmed four new teams will join the league. The list includes the Hafford Mustangs, Cut Knife Colts, Perdue Pirates and Glaslyn North Stars.
Glaslyn moved over from the Beaver Lakes Hockey League, where they lost the league championship to St. Louis last season. Cut Knife most recently played in the North Saskatchewan River Hockey League, but has been out of the league following the 2008-09 season.
Hafford and Perdue, haven't had teams play in those centres in years, but have players who have played on other teams in other leagues.
The only debate is whether or not all four from last year will be back in the league. Battleford, Maymont and Radisson are in, but a final decision about Saulteaux should be made within the week.
If there are eight teams, the league will split into east and west division, with each team playing three games against their division and a home-and-home with those teams not in the division.
The league scheduling meeting is Sept. 28, and tryouts and recruitment efforts will be made by many of the teams.
The Battleford Beaver Blues will hold open tryouts Oct. 28 and 29. The fee is $20 with registration at 6:30 p.m.
