The Battlefords Skating Club returned from Macklin like Viking warriors - laden with gold and silver.
"We were really pleased with the results," said coach Cindy Tymoruski of the Region 13 Invitational Competition held Feb. 26.
Region 13 encompasses 17 skate clubs throughout the Northwest. Almost 300 skaters competed in the event, which went from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
"It was an extremely challenging day for skaters, to keep their energy up and stay focused," said Tymoruski, explaining BSC skaters competed in an average of four events each over the course of the day.
The 13 skaters who represented the BSC at the regional competition brought home a total of 20 gold medals, nine silver medals, four bronze medals and one fourth place.
"Everybody handled themselves really well," said Tymoruski.
Three girls brought home four gold medals each; Ashlynne Ukrainetz, Corinne Sokul and Kennedy Schaefer.
Corinne won gold in every category she competed in, except team skate.
This is Corinne's first year skating with the BSC. The 13-year-old previously skated out of Lloydminster, where she lives.
"I like the jumps," she said, adding her favourite move is the axle.
She said winning so many medals "feels very satisfying. It feels like your hard work has paid off."
For some of the BSC skaters, like Corinne, the regional competition was one in a long list of events they've competed in, but for others, it was their first competition.
Kassie Reid, 9, has been skating for about five years. The Regional 13 Invitational was her first competition and, coming home with two gold and two silver medals, it was a stellar experience.
Although a little nervous, she said, "I just let go of my nerves and just skated."
Kassie, who lives near Paradise Valley, said she loves figure skating.
"I like dressing up pretty," she said, adding, "I jump really high."
