It is early in the North Saskatchewan River Baseball League season, but already each team is proving their staff ace can compete with anyone and any team has a chance to win any night.
Perhaps the biggest game of note is that the Lloydminster Meridian Twins have a chink in their armour after failing to keep their nearly two-year winning streak intact.
The Twins didn't lose, however, they played 10 innings before the game was called due to darkness.
Standard Hill marched Brett Harrison to the mound and he allowed one earned run as the two teams tied 2-2.
Also Tuesday night, the Wilkie Brewers hosted the Border City Blue Jays and had a strong pitching performance from Russ Nielsen. In his first game of the season, Nielsen carried a shutout into the sixth inning. The Border City Blue Jays used three hits and two walks to score four runs to make it 9-4 at that point.
Wilkie went on to win 12-5 with the offence led by Cody Wilgenbush who had five RBI and two hits. Jason Schell also had three hits on the night.
Pitching was again the key in the game between the Unity Cardinals and St. Walburg Reds. The Cardinals had their newest player, Shane Gimas on the mound and he didn't disappoint. Gimas struck out 13 batters in six and third innings, as the Cardinals beat the Reds 6-5.
The final game Tuesday had the Mervin Flyers in Lloydminster to take on the Midget Twins. The Midget Twins handed Mervin their first loss of the season with a 7-5 victory.
Wednesday evening, The Border City Blue Jays' offence came alive, as they beat the Reds 17-4 in St. Walburg.
Standard Hill continued their winning ways Wednesday, as they beat the Unity Midgets 15-5 at Silver Lake.
The schedule for Thursday had the Midwest Expos in Mervin and the Unity Midget A's in Lloydminster to play the Midget Twins.
Friday, two games will be played under the lights, as the North Battleford Beavers look for their first win of the season when they take on the Unity Cardinals. The Mervin Flyers look to get back on the winning track in Kindersley against the Raiders.
Sunday, the Wilkie Brewers travel to St. Walburg before finishing the day in Meadow Lake during their only scheduled double header of the season.
