Orcas make big splash at Regina swim meet

The local swim club sent just seven swimmers to the Lawson Aquatic Centre in Regina May 14 to 16, but those seven produced 33 top 10 finishes. The busiest swimmer representing the Orcas at the meet was Katie Serhienko. Katie swam in 14 races.

The busiest swimmer representing the Orcas at the meet was Katie Serhienko. Katie swam in 14 races. She competed in the female 11-12 division and in the 50m free she was second. She was third in the 50m back, fourth in the 200m free and 200m back, fifth in the 50m and 100m back and the 100m free, she was sixth in another 100m free, seventh in a 100m back and 50m free, eighth in 50m free, ninth in 50m free and 200m IM and 19th in the 200m breast. Katie finished with seven personal best times.

Sheldon Semaganis was the oldest male swimmer from the Battlefords and he competed in 10 races, had five personal best times and four club records in the male 15 and over division. His best finish was in the 50m free where he was seventh. He had four ninth place finishes in the 50m fly, 50m breast, 200m breast and 200m IM, two 10th place finishes in the 200m back and 50m free an 11th place finish in the 200m free, 12th in the 50m free and he also competed in the 100m fly.

Cassidy Serhienko, 10, was in the 10 and under division in eight races and earned six personal best times and a club record. The club record produced her best finish as she took fifth in the 200m breast. She also finished seventh in the 50m breast, eighth in 100m breast, ninth in 200m IM,10th in 50m free, 11th in 200m free, 12th in 100m free and 14th in 100m back.

Helaina Johnson competed in the 15 and over female category and all seven of her races produced personal best times. Helaina was fourth in 200m back, sixth in 200m IM, 10th in 100m fly, 12th in 200m free and 13th in 100m back and 100m free.

Matthew Parker had four personal best times and a club record in the male 13-14 division. The club record produced a 10th place finish in the 200m breast, but his best finish came in the 100m back where Matthew took ninth place. His other results were 12th in 400m free, 14th in 200m free, 16th in 200m IM, 18th in 100m free, 28th in 50m free and he competed in the 100m breast.

Eight-year-old Taylor Parker had five races in the male 10 and under division. Taylor had four personal best times. His results were ninth in the 50m breast, 10th in 100m free, 11th in 100m back and 12th in 50m back and 50m free.

The last local swimmer, Luke Hoiland, was competing in his first swim meet. Obviously all five of his races were personal best times in the male 10 and under division. The eight-year-old was fourth in the 100m breast, seventh in 50m breast, ninth in 50m free and 100m free and 11th in 50m back.

The Ocras swimmers had 37 of 56 personal best times with six club records, three new Manitoba/Saskatchewan AA provincial qualifying times and two medals at the Michelle Moore Memorial Invitational Meet.
