One last chance at a championship

It may be too early to think about Easter, but as far as hockey goes in the Battlefords the Battlefords Minor Hockey Association and Battlefords Female Hockey Association now have all their eggs in one basket.

It may be too early to think about Easter, but as far as hockey goes in the Battlefords the Battlefords Minor Hockey Association and Battlefords Female Hockey Association now have all their eggs in one basket.

Only one team from the Battlefords has a chance to bring home a championship this season and that is the Peewee A Barons.

The Barons won their first and only round of provincial playoffs against LLRIB. They won game one 9-8 at home and were in La Ronge March 13 winning 11-3.

The Barons will take on the Yorkton Terriers in the final. Game one goes Friday at the Civic Centre with game two set to return to Yorkton Sunday.

Other local teams were playing up until last week and had their seasons ended. The Midget AA Barons were in a do-or-die situation against Warman Wednesday and pulled out a one-goal victory. The Barons lost game one of the best-of-three series 5-0 in Warman, but responded on home ice with a 6-5 win. The third and final game was played in Warman Saturday and the Barons battled the Wildcats all game, but fell 4-3 in the consolation playoff final.

The Battlefords Bantam Sharks were also in action Wednesday night in the Battlefords with their backs against the boards. The Sharks trailed Rosthern 5-3 in the two-game total-goal series and couldn't outscore the third overall Rosthern team in game two. The Sharks fell 5-4 at the Civic Centre and saw their season end in the North Saskatchewan Female Hockey League semi final.

The initiation and novice division also wrapped up their seasons on the weekend with mini tournaments and a wind up to cap off what was for some their first years playing hockey.

The initiation division had six teams this season as well as the novice division and the future of hockey in the Battlefords appears to be alive and as strong as ever.

Both hockey organizations will be holding their annual general meetings in the next weeks with the BMHA meeting scheduled for April 12 at 7 p.m. at the Alex Dillabough Centre and the BFHA set to meet April 19 at 7 p.m. at the Don Ross Centre.
