New head coach and general manager Kevin Hasselberg has been in the Battlefords for a couple weeks now and this week his family joined him, with school for his son beginning this week.
His schedule has been a bit hectic, but Hasselberg is looking forward to starting training camp and more importantly evaluate the players he inherited from Ken Pearson.
Training camp officially begins Wednesday, but Hasselberg, along with assistant coach Blair Atchynum, had a chance to get a glimpse of some of their players Monday evening.
Three goalies and 16 players ran through a few drills Monday and scrimmaged with the coaches looking on from the stands at the Civic Centre.
Most of the local North Stars products were on the ice including Brett Miller, Blake Tatchell, Boyd Wakelin, Tanner Schwab, Jared Samborski, Tyler Cockburn and Blair Mahon. Other returning players who were already in the Battlefords and skating Monday were Woody Klassen, Zach MacLellan, Graham Hildebrand, Tim Rollins and Braeden Johnson.
Hasselberg expects the numbers of players to grown towards the 40 mark for the two-day camp and he basically said until he gets a chance to see them in action there are 25 open roster spots and each player will have to earn his spot.
The Battlefords North Stars jump right into exhibition action, and because of that there will be no intersqaud game at camp this year. The North Stars have a home-and-home with the Lloydminster Bobcats Friday and Saturday and most if not all the players at camp should get an opportunity to play in a game this weekend.
Camp registration is at 1:30 p.m. with the first ice session at 4 p.m. The first scrimmage is at 7:30 p.m. and Thursday the scrimmage is scheduled for 4 p.m.
The coach and general manager is in place, the new broadcast voice of the North Stars should be arriving soon, the announcement of the new marketing and office manager should be made official in the next couple of days and now all that is left to be determined is which 25 players will make up the 2011 Battlefords North Stars' roster.
