It could be a year or two before many of the players at the Battlefords North Stars camp are actually competing for a roster spot, but nonetheless this is an opportunity to impress the coaches.
The North Stars' spring camp runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Civic Centre with a practice and game Friday, two games Saturday and a game Sunday.
The idea of the camp is to give the 15-, 16- and 17-year-old players on the North Stars' radar a chance to compete with players their age as they battle for spots on the North Stars' protect roster of 50.
"We want to see where our list players are at, as well as educate them about the league and organization," said North Stars head coach and general manger Ken Pearson.
Pearson has been busy since the North Stars season had ended with scouting and recruiting. He returned to the Battlefords Saturday in preparation for the camp. Overall, Pearson said the hockey trips have went well and this weekend should give him and his staff an idea of what their future could look like.
The camp will consist of two teams, but a few of the North Stars' prospect will not be at the camp this weekend, those from the Prince Albert Mintos organization and one from the Winnipeg Thrashers will not be at the camp confirmed Pearson. Other free agents have been invited to camp and since players can't be signed until June 1 this is their last chance to impress the coaches and at least secure a spot at the North Stars' fall camp.
