The North Saskatchewan River Baseball League playoffs resumed Tuesday. The Wilkie Brewers travelled to Meadow Lake while the Lloydminster Meridian Twins hosted the Lloydminster Junior Redhawks.
The Brewers lead their series 1-0 while the all-Lloydminster semi final started with game one Tuesday.
There was a break in the schedule, as Wilkie and Meadow Lake, along with Mervin played in Meadow Lake in the SBA senior A2 provincials. Meadow Lake beat Wilkie in the first game of the weekend tournament in extra innings and eventually went on to beat Carnduff in the final to claim the senior A2 provincial title.
Although the league games slowed down, it was still an exciting time in the NSRBL, as it was announced Russ Nielsen of the Wilkie Brewers won the league MVP award. Neilsen was third in batting average as he hit .467 with 31 plate appearances. Playing in just eight games with the Brewers, Nielsen had 14 hits, was third in the league with two homeruns, and second in the league in RBI with 16.
Nielsen was also a key contributor to Wilkie's 11-2 record from the pitching mound, as he gave up just four earned runs in 20 innings pitched picking up three wins and carrying a 1.40 ERA. Neilsen returned to the Brewers for his first time in three seasons, and when he wasn't pitching he was catching for Wilkie and batting fourth in the lineup.
Tied as the runner-ups of the NSRBL MVP award were Colby Field of the Border City Blue Jays and Jason Fechter of the Lloydminster Junior Redhawks.
Fechter had four wins in 31 innings pitched with a 2.26 ERA and Field had two wins in 16 innings pitched while carrying a perfect 0.00 ERA.
