The Muenster Bantam Red Sox won the Bantam A Provincial Championship in Melfort July 16-17.
The Sox defeated Unity in the final 9-4, but it wasn't an easy road to get there.
The team finished round robin play with two wins one loss. They won 3-2 over Unity, lost 6-5 to Carrot River, and won 18-0 n over Swift Current.
The Sox then had to play a tie-breaker game Sunday morning against Carrot River to advance to the semifinal.
After defeating Carrot River, they moved on to play Pilot Butte in the semifinal.
Pilot Butte was 3-0 in their pool and was one of the favourites to win.
With timely hitting, good defence and great pitching by Nick Anderson the Red Sox defeated Pilot Butte 4-1 to advance to the final, noted coach Garret Korte.
Muenster had to play Unity in the final after Unity beat Melfort in their semifinal game.
Lyndon Varga pitched six complete innings for the Sox and Blake Nordick closed the final inning to win.
Once again, offence and defence did their job, Korte said. Brett Szautner made a highlight reel catch against the left-field fence in the fourth inning for the third out that saved two runs from scoring.
"All 14 players on the team contributed to this win," Korte said.
Korte also indicated that the Sask Baseball Association representative said that he doesn't think that a team has ever won three games in one day to win the provincial championship.
"It is incredible that the players stepped on the field at 8 a.m. Sunday morning and walked off the diamond at 6:30 p.m. Sunday evening after playing a total of 21 innings in 30-degree heat," Korte said. "They never showed signs of fatigue."
