Most minor hockey teams are heading into the final week or two of the regular season while some are gearing up for a lengthy playoff run, others are simply looking to wrap up the 2010-11 season.
Midget AA Barons
The AA Barons doubled their win total with a convincing 8-1 over Parkland at the Civic Centre Sunday.
The Barons last win was Oct. 29 over Meadow Lake and they now sit at 2-15-0.
With five games remaining, the Barons will not make the championship playoffs, but the consolation playoff instead.
Sunday is a rematch with Parkland in Shellbrook.
Midget A Barons
Both Barons teams had home games on the weekend with both teams suffering losses.
The Barons #2 won 12-0 in Meadow Lake Saturday before losing 8-5 to Edam Sunday at the Civic Centre.
The Barons # 2 sit in third place with a 10-6-3 record and will finish the regular season schedule in Turtleford Friday.
The Barons #1 had a shortened roster once again, as they lost 13-6 to Spiritwood. The Barons #1 will wrap up their season Sunday in Edam. Since they sit in ninth place they will not make the playoffs and the six regulars will have a chance to focus strictly on provincials.
Midget Sharks
The Sharks had the weekend off because some players were in Regina at the Sask First Tournament, but they will resume their regular season schedule Friday at home against West Central. Saturday they travel to Elrose and Sunday they are home to Elrose once again.
Bantam AA Barons
The Barons split a home-and-home weekend series with Unity, as it was the home team winning both games. Friday, the Barons won 4-2 and Sunday Unity prevailed 7-2.
The Barons will put their 5-10-2 record on the line this weekend when they host West Central Saturday. Sunday, the Barons head to Meadow Lake in Centre Four Hockey League action.
Bantam A Barons
The STEP League Barons have two games remaining on their regular season schedule, as they travel to Spiritwood Saturday and host Goodsoil Sunday.
The Hi-Way 14 Barons have just three games remaining including a home game Friday against Biggar. The Barons are tied for first place with a 10-3-2 record.
Bantam Sharks
The Sharks sit in third place in the North Saskatchewan Female Hockey League with a 9-1-1 record. The Sharks play at home Friday against Rosetown and are in Tisdale Saturday. Sunday, they travel to Hudson Bay to face off against the Northeast Lakers.
Peewee AA Barons
The Barons played a league game against West Central and a provincial game against Prince Albert last weekend. They won one and lost one. Fortunately for the Barons they won the right game and by the right score against Prince Albert.
The Barons trailed the two-game total-goal series 6-4 after losing in Prince Albert Jan. 18. In the return game the Barons held on for a 4-1 win. Rhett Lesmeister and Owen Lamb scored for the Barons in the second period and Jayden Nachtegaele put them up 3-0 in the third. Prince Albert responded later in the third frame, but it was Lamb scoring the series-winning goal with seven minutes left in the third period.
Mathew Flath was the winning goalie as the Barons advance to take on Humboldt.
The Barons lost 6-3 to in Dodsland with Dax Desmarais between the pipes.
The Barons will be in regular season action Sunday against West Central at the Don Ross.
Peewee A Barons
Friday, the Barons #4 beat Meadow Lake 6-3 and they will wrap up the regular season Saturday. The Barons #4 are 9-4-0 and locked into second place in the East Division.
The Barons #3 beat St. Walburg 5-1. Tuesday, they were scheduled to wrap up their regular season at home to Edam. The Barons #3 were 8-5-0.
Saturday and Sunday, the Barons #2 team will play out the remainder of their regular season with games in Turtleford and Battleford, both against Turtleford. The Barons #2 were 6-5-0.
The Barons #1 fell 9-3 to Turtleford Saturday, and will wrap up the regular season at home Saturday with a meeting against St. Walburg and a Monday night game against Edam.
Peewee Sharks
The Sharks were in a tournament on the weekend in Vermilion, Alta. and came within a goal of winning the championship. The first game of the tournament also served as a regular season game between Vermilion and the Sharks. The Sharks came away with a 10-0 victory improving their record to 10-4-1 in East CentralAlberta Female Hockey League action. Leading the scoring for the Sharks was Melina Johnston with three goals and an assist. Morgan Lamontagne added two goals and Caylin Edwards chipped in with a goal and an assist. Rounding out the Sharks' scoring was Tayla Poole, Skyler Peterson, Jordyn Tuck and Nahoni Tootoosis.Matheson Colliar picked up the shutout her first of two straight shutouts.
In game two, the Sharks beat Strathmore, Alta.5-0. Once again Melina led the Sharks in scoring picking up the hat trick. Nahoni added a goal and two assists and Caylin picked up a goal and an assist.
In the final, the Sharks were downed 7-6 by Wainwright, Alta. Caylin recorded a hat trick. Sydney Geering added two goals and Melina had a single.
The next action for the Sharks is Saturday when they close out the regular season against Wainwright.
