Hometown fans will have a chance to see a hometown boy ride the waves in Saskatoon in July.
Rusty Malinoski, a native of Humboldt, will be coming back to his home province for WakeRide in Saskatoon July 15-17.
The annual extreme sports festival features wakeboarders performing on the river and in a constructed pool in Victoria Park. Skateboarders and motocross athletes will also perform, but on dry land.
The event also features a KidZone section where youth can try out different sports free of charge. There will be professional wakeboarders and skateboarders performing, bands and entertainers and other water activities like boat races.
Malinoski, who is ranked among the top three riders in the world by the World Wakeboarding Association, is the headlining wakeboarder at the event. He appeared at the first WakeRide in 2009.
WakeRide is a charity event. This year, the money will be going towards worthwhile organizations like Big Brothers/Big Sisters, KidSport and White Buffalo Youth Lodge.
According to Malinoski's family, Humboldt's own professional wakeboarder who calls Florida home these days will be in Humboldt a few days before the Saskatoon event, likely practising his moves on his home surf - Humboldt Lake.
