With the lifting of all COVID-19 restrictions, the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Battleford has confirmed they will be able to proceed with the 36th annual induction on Aug. 21. Among the inductees is Elemer Jerkovits.
Elemer Jerkovits has been a baseball umpire since 1976. His long list of credits include more than 25 Saskatchewan provincial age group championships, nine western age group championships, including the Western Canada Senior Championships in 2018, and 14 Baseball Canada championships.
He has been a mainstay on the national stage of umpiring, officiated at tournaments sponsored by the Toronto Blue Jays as well as Canada Cup championships as well as involvement in the Saskatchewan Summer Games. He has also advanced umpire development through involvement with the Baseball Canada International Umpire organization. He was the supervisor for the 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games in Estevan.
Jerkovits umpired at the World International Baseball Championships in Tokyo, Japan, in 2010. He was the first base umpire for the final game. at the Pan-Am Games in Toronto in 2015 and at the women’s World U18 Baseball Championship in Thunder Bay, Ont. in 2017.
Jerkovits was affiliated and active in many organizations and committees: Regina Baseball Umpires Associations [member since 1989] - treasurer, vice-president and president; Baseball Saskatchewan umpire committee member as Regina zone director and executive committee member; and Baseball Canada National Program Umpire Level 4, Level 5 and Umpire Clinician Course Conductor.
