Locals start on skis in Halifax

The 2011 Canada Winter Games are well underway and the local athletes didn't take long to get in action and perform well. Biathlete, Matthew Hudec of North Battleford finished 14th in the 15km male individual event.

The 2011 Canada Winter Games are well underway and the local athletes didn't take long to get in action and perform well.

Biathlete, Matthew Hudec of North Battleford finished 14th in the 15km male individual event. The race ran Sunday with Hudec finishing in just under 53 minutes.

Devon Sylvester of North Battleford finished in 55:31.9 and in 19th place in the same event. Patrick Hudec, the other North Battleford biathlete, finished 30th with a mark of 1:01:11.4.

The Livelong sisters, Kayla and Brynn Hartley, were also in action in the 12.5km female individual event and placed 25th and 31st. Kayla finished in a time of 59:26.6 while Brynn's time was 1:05:48.3.

Tuesday, the biathletes were back on the course for the 10km male sprint and 7.5 km female sprint. Matthew was the top Saskatchewan finisher once again with a time of 37:52.9. placing 24th. Devon was 34th and Patrick was 36th.

Kayla finished 26th with a time of 30:26.4 and Brynn was nearly three minutes back and in 31st.

Wednesday, the biathletes will compete in the 12.5km male pursuit and 10km female pursuit and they will wrap up their Winter Games experience with the 3 x 7.5km male relay and 3 x 6km female relay.

In other week one sports, Aidan Merryweather and Nolan Merryweather of Paynton were competing in the halfpipe event in freestyle skiing Sunday. The Merryweathers failed to qualify for the final run and were out of the top eight.

The other first week sports, without local athletes included, are gymnastics, female curling, male hockey, ringette, target shooting, speed skating, squash and wheelchair basketball.

Saskatchewan's medal count sat at one gold and one silver at press time. The target shooting female team won gold in air rifle. The male target shooting team won silver.
