Local athletes contribute to Saskatchewan's impressive medal count

The first half of the 2011 Western Canada Summer Games from Kamloops, B.C. is completed. Four local area athletes competed in the first half of the games in track and field. The locals also contributed to Saskatchewan's medal count.

The first half of the 2011 Western Canada Summer Games from Kamloops, B.C. is completed.

Four local area athletes competed in the first half of the games in track and field. The locals also contributed to Saskatchewan's medal count. Team Sask ended the first half with the second most gold medals and third most overall. Saskatchewan has 42 gold medals, 32 silver and 30 bronze while B.C. leads the way with 53 gold medals, 40 silver and 34 bronze.

Saturday, one of the first medals Saskatchewan won was in the men's discus throw. Nolan Machiskinic of Cut Knife tossed his throw 43.41m, which was good enough for a bronze medal.

Machiskinic was at it again the next day, as he competed in the men's shot put and beat all competitors by over two metres with his throw of 15.29m to claim the gold medal.

The next day, in the men's javelin, it was another Cut Knifer - Brandon O'Donnell who was 1.85m out of the medals with a throw of 52m to earn fourth place.

Machiskinic and O'Donnell also competed in the men's hammer throw event where Machiskinic finished fifth and O'Donnell was 11th.

O'Donnell also was eighth in discus.

On the women's side of the athletics events, Breanna Rak of Cut Knife won gold in discus with a 46.35m throw. She was fourth in shot put with an 11.77m mark, .12m out of the medals. Rak also just missed the medals in javelin placing fourth with a 35.61m throw.

Wilkie's Kennedy Glassford competed in two events and had her best finish in women's high jump, as she placed sixth jumping 1.65m. She also competed in pole vault.

Sam Stilborn of North Battleford, a member of the men's volleyball team and Lindsay Reimer of North Battleford, a swimmer, will participate in the second half of the games which began Thursday.
