It was a perfect afternoon for football and a perfect afternoon for the Lanigan Lazers who hosted the Lakeside Bombers out of Watson on September 23.
The unseasonably warm weather brought out over 100 spectators from the community who came to cheer the Lazers on at the Gordon Greve Sports Ground.
The Lazers started the game quick out of the gate with a touchdown on their opening drive. However, Watson answered on the following possession when they broke a huge 65-yard touchdown run.
After the Lazers' drive stalled at midfield on their second possession, the Bombers went back to work on the ground by pounding out another long touchdown. The Lazers promptly replied with a nice drive back down the field to put up another major. Scoring went on in this way for much of the game as each team continued to tack the points on to its side of the scoreboard.
The rest of the first half remained close and the Lazers took a very small lead into the second half.
In the second half of the game, the Lazers stepped up their defence and after a few adjustments were able to start holding the Bombers offence in check. The offence also started to play a looser game and began to find holes in the secondary of the Bombers to punch in a few more scores.
The fourth quarter saw playing time for the deep Lanigan bench, but Watson had a gutsy performance as they put up a couple more majors to put a scare into the Lazers' head coach, who needed to put his starters back into the game to secure the 54-39 win over the visiting team.
This puts the Lazers into fourth place in their conference, with two wins and two losses.
The Lazers' coaching staff congratulate the Bomber squad for a very determined effort. Despite having a tough third quarter, they never gave up and kept coming hard all game even with a short bench and a few key injuries.
On September 30, the Lazers travel to Wynyard to play the Bears.
