Though their team did not make it to Westerns, some of the Humboldt Dodgers did.Four players of the Humboldt Dodgers AAA Midget baseball team were picked up by the Swift Current Indians to play at the Western Canadian AA Midget Baseball championships held August 12-15 in Surrey, B.C.The first game was against Manitoba, and the Indians lost 9-3. The next game was against the host team, and Swift Current won 11-1. That evening, the Indians played B.C. , and beat them 12-2. In their final round robin game, Swift Current faced Alberta and won 6-4. This put the Saskatchewan team in the final against B.C. "This was a very tight game," said Roger Gerwing, the coach of the Dodgers who also helped coach the Indians at WesternsB.C went up 2-0 early in the game, then Swift Current tied it up in the third inning.B.C. then went ahead 3-2 in the fifth, and in the sixth, Swift Current scored two runs to go ahead 4-3. Humboldt pitcher Jordan Gerwing took the mound in the seventh inning, and struck out the final batter, while another Dodger, Cody Thiel, scored the winning run. "Our boys played great the whole tournament," said Gerwing, and came home with gold medals.A few players also picked up some additional hardware. In every game at the tournament, a "most valuable player" was recognized. In their first game, Cody Thiel of Humboldt was selected as MVP; in the second game, Jordan Gerwing was selected, and in the third game, Dean Jaeb was the MVP.
