The list of golfing events and tournaments is a long one with local and provincial events still the focus for many this time of year. Some Northwest golfers had some great showings during the last few weeks.
Most recently, was the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour in Waskesiu on the weekend, where 29 golfers ranging from 12 to 19 hit the links for two days of golf.
In the Boys 13 and Under division, Kristian Houk, 12, was the top golfer. Kristian shot an 87 Saturday and an 83 Sunday to win his division by four strokes.
"I play the MJT because I like the people who run it and it feels good because it is my first win," Kristian told MJT organizers after the event, adding, "I am just really happy.I never had doubt in my head.I played focused."
Staying with junior golfers, Aug. 22 and 23 at the Tour Championship in Saskatoon at the Willows Golf and Country Club, Unity's Justin Wood shot a 68 and 73 to clinch second place in the 15- and 16-year-old division. Justin finished the MJT season in fourth place in his age category with 1027.5 points. Points are awarded at each SGI Canada Saskatchewan Junior Order of Merit Tour event and based on a golfers placement in their division. Justin was 162.5 points behind the leader of his division.
Tyler Wilson and Taylor Cook finished in the top 50 in the Junior Order of Merit Tour Men's 17 and 18 Division.
Kristian, also competed in the Junior Order of Merit Tour and was tied for 10th in the men's 12 and under division.
Moving up the men's division, one of the Northwest's best golfers and best amateur golfers in Saskatchewan for that matter, Scott Thompson of St. Walburg competed in the Canadian Men's Amateur Championship in Winnipeg Aug. 11 to 14. Thompson held his own and made the cut finishing in 69th place and 18 over par after four rounds. The winning score was an impressive -10 by Mackenzie Hughes of Ontario.
Aug. 23 to 26, North Battleford's Gary Tuffs competed at the Canadian Men's Senior Championship at the Twin Rivers Golf Course in Port Balndford, Nfld. Tuff shot an 80, 80, 79 and 86 to finish +41.
This week marks the end of all Golf Saskatchewan events, but student golfers can look forward to grass and sand high school provincial golf Sept. 23 and 24.
