You win some, you lose some.
Things didn't go quite as well as hoped for St. Gregor's Muyres clan last week, but both Dallan and Kirk Muyres did gain some valuable experience curling at an elite level.
Dallan Muyres played lead with the Steve Laycock rink at the 2011 Tim Hortons Brier in London, Ont. His dad, Lyle Muyres, served as the team's coach.
It was an up-and-down tournament for the Saskatchewan foursome, as they finished round-robin play with a 4-7 record. They started well enough, with back-to-back victories over The Territories and Quebec.
But just as quickly as they gained some momentum they lost it, dropping three straight.
Following another two-game win streak, they continued their inconsistency with four straight losses, forcing them to watch the page playoff from the stands.
Manitoba's Jeff Stoughton won the Brier with an 8-6 victory over Ontario's Glenn Howard in the final.
The week was definitely more memorable for the younger Muyres brother, however, as Kirk and his Canadian junior champion teammates fought their way to a berth in the bronze medal game at the curling World Junior Championships.
The Worlds took place from March 5-13 in Perth, Scotland. Kirk Muyres plays third on the Braeden Moskowy team that curls out of Regina.
Despite a disappointing 0-3 start, Muyres helped his squad battle back into contention with six straight wins to finish round robin play in fourth place.
They followed that up with a seventh straight win, beating Norway 10-4 in the 3-4 page playoff before falling to Switzerland 6-5 in a nailbiter of semi-final.
Sweden beat Switzerland by an identical 6-5 count to win the gold medal, while Canada settled for a rematch with Norway in the consolation round. This time Norway took the game and the bronze medal with a 10-2 win.
None of the Muyres were available for comment at press time.
