EAST CENTRAL — Efforts are underway throughout Carrot River, Melfort, Prince Albert and Birch Hills to create a senior men’s baseball league.

“We kind of looked at the landscape and noticed there’s a lack of senior baseball in the central and north east region,” said Adam Morrison, who is fronting the Saskatchewan Highway 3 Baseball League project.

“Me and Lance Alexander, from Prince Albert Minor Baseball, got together and had some exhibition games, and we thought, you know what? It would be awesome if we could get a senior men’s league going back on this area.”

As a result the two and started reaching out to teams throughout the area.

Morrison said that he feels after someone is over the age of 18, there’s nowhere to play competitively – and that’s something they want to change.

“It will still be a competitive league, I would compare it to senior hockey. Senior hockey is very successful in this part of the province, and we’re looking to put in something like that.”

He said there are no official borders on the league, but they are hoping to keep it local with six to eight teams.

“This league is going to be a league for working Joes, and farmers and people going to school. We’re going to try and make it as local as possible and easily accessible for guys who only want to make a half-hour to an hour trip to play senior baseball.”

Any teams wishing to submit an application to join this league may do so by emailing [email protected].

Applications will be accepted until mid-November, at which time they will schedule a league meeting to discuss the operations.

“The last time there was a senior baseball team in Birch Hills would have been the ’80s,” Morrison said.

“That’s what we’re also trying to ignite in some of these communities as well, bringing back that baseball feel in spring and summer, and bringing the community together over sport again.”
