The Humboldt Midget AAA Dodgers' train kept a-rolling last week with another impressive pair of wins over their Sask. Premier Baseball League competition.
Keenan Lucas had a solid complete game effort Sunday, June 19 in Regina against the host Athletics, scattering three hits and giving up just one run through seven innings to pace the Dodgers to a 3-1 victory. With the win, the Dodgers improved their record to 10-2 on the year.
The victory spoiled what was a stellar pitching effort by the Athletics' Dylan Kozak. Like Lucas, Kozak also went the distance on the mound for his team, and he allowed just one hit while striking out seven.
Unfortunately for Kozak, his fielders weren't able to back him up. All three Humboldt runs were unearned.
Dodgers manager Roger Gerwing said Humboldt's own defence was rock solid, with Dean Jaeb and Brandon Tkatch making some spectacular plays in the field.
Earlier in the week, Jaeb pitched 4 and a third strong innings and was a human wrecking ball at the plate as the Dodgers cruised to an 8-2 win over the Saskatoon Giants. The teams met at Cairns Field in Saskatoon on June 14.
Jaeb had two doubles and drove in three runs to lead the Humboldt offence while also picking up his league-leading fourth win on the mound.
While Jaeb wasn't overpowering, and didn't strike out a single batter, he allowed only one hit while walking two and beaning a pair. Aaron Baker came in and closed out the game, allowing two hits through two and two-thirds innings. Both pitchers gave up a single earned run.
The Dodgers' offence was cooking right off the start in this one. In the first inning, Jordan Gerwing hit his league-leading fifth triple of the year, driving in Curtis Fontaine. Then Cam Blair drove in Gerwing with an RBI single. From that point on, there was never any doubt.
Merit Meyer scored twice, and had an RBI as well. Fontaine and Eric Bollefer also contributed RBI hits.
"The bats were hot tonight," manager Roger Gerwing agreed. "The boys played an excellent game all-around."
Humboldt's next action is at home on Sunday, June 26, with a doubleheader against the Regina Wolfpack. Games are at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at the Uniplex diamonds.
