Hugh Carr, a Notre Dame Hounds pitcher, is СÀ¶ÊÓƵ inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame.
Born Hugo Raymond Dombowsky, Oct. 13, 1929, he died Hugh Carr, Nov. 16, 1972. He grew up in Avonlea.
From 1945 to 1947, Carr attended Campion College in Regina for Grades 10 to 12 and played baseball as a pitcher.
From 1947-1951 Pere Murray recruited him to Notre Dame in the summer of 1947 to pitch for the and study for a Bachelor of Arts Degree.
Car pitched for the Hounds in the highly competitive СÀ¶ÊÓƵ Saskatchewan Baseball League, and also in tournaments. Newspapers called him the pitcher with the "golden arm."
The league was considered a very high semi-pro league. Reports are that Carr got noticed by major league scouts.
Also, at that time, Hugh helped coach the junior team.
From 1951-52, Carr attended St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, N.S., where he completed a Bachelor of Education degree. In the summer of 1952, he was recruited to play for Gull Lake in tournaments.
From 1952-53 Carr taught at the M&S Mines near Bienfait. In August, 1953, he married Jean Nepper and remained at the M&S Mines to teach that fall. While there, he played baseball for Bienfait/Estevan.
In 1954 Pere Murray recruited Carr to return to Notre Dame to teach high school and university. During that time, he pitched and coached baseball, filling in for Frank Germann.
In 1955 he pitched two nine inning games at a tournament in Indian Head.
Carr attended the University of Ottawa in 1959 to complete a Masters in Education.
Carr returned to Notre Dame and continued to manage the baseball team. He also coached midget and juvenile hockey teams during the 1950s and '60s.
Sometime in the late '50s or early '60s, Satchel Paige, a professional baseball player and one of Carr's baseball idols, was touring the province with his team from the United States. Carr was instrumental in successfully recruiting Satchel to have his team play an exhibition game against the Notre Dame Hounds at Wilcox.
Carr was named president of the Saskatchewan Baseball League in 1964.
Hugh died at the age of 43 in1972.
The Late Hugh Carr will be inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame at the 27th annual induction, Saturday, Aug. 20 at Battleford.
