Rarely is it a good thing when the numbers on the golf course drastically increase, but in the case of the Battlefords United Way golf tournament the rise in the number of participants and sponsors was welcomed with open arms.

Monday, at Jackfish Golf and Conference Centre, the 14th annual Battlefords United Way Golf Tournament took place and over 100 golfers hit the links. Prizes were issued for all the golfers and some major hole-in-one prizes were on the line so golfers had nothing to lose and while all the fun was going on a great local organization was СÀ¶ÊÓƵ supported. Last year's tournament had just 66 golfers and executive director of the BUW Jane Zielke says a number of things may have contributed to the strong support this year.

Along with a young and energetic board, the new location of the tournament and new angles of work in the community the bounce back year of the tournament was one of the best in recent years.

"We have worked really hard to support different initiatives this year and I think that has helped," said Zielke. "We have been very active in this community."

Zielke complimented Jackfish and their staff for the way they promoted the tournament and treated the golfers and the organizing committee throughout the entire process. Also helping to get the excitement and enthusiasm back for this tournament was a special guest and former Edmonton Oilers and current Minnasota Wild forward Kyle Brodziak. He signed autographs and commented that he would potentially return next season for the tournament with NHL friends, which Zielke said would only help to grow the tournament.

Now with the fun in the sun over for this year, the plans on how to improve and continue to grow for the 2012 Battlefords United Way Golf Tournament will soon be the topic of discussion, but for those who attended the 2011 version they were greatly impressed.
