The Battlefords AAA Sharks and Prince Albert Bears battled at the Battleford Arena Thursday in Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League action and it was the Bears rallying to earn the win.
It was a match up between the seventh and eighth place teams and the score was close, as expected, for the first period.
Carlee Hrenkiw scored the game's first goal for Prince Albert seven minutes in. The Sharks responded with a goal from defenceman Rachel Trach on a point shot three minutes later. Trach's second of the season was assisted by Delaney Ross.
A minute later, Monique Wickstrom scored her fifth goal of the season from Amanda Grainger and Tori Bonnett and the Sharks had the 2-1 lead.
The Bears scored five unanswered goals, including one with 13 seconds left in the first period by Hrenkiw.
In the second, the Sharks were on the powerplay, but it was Kelsey Halkett scoring for the Bears making it 3-2 heading into the final period.
The intensity picked up in the final period as the Sharks took five minor penalties in the third compared to the Bears' two and Prince Albert made them pay.
Danielle Miller and Jolene Zakaluzny scored powerplay goals while Miller added a late even strength goal to seal the 6-2 win.
Jessica Vance made 22 saves for the win while Hannah Brock was saddled with the loss after a 25 save performance.
The Sharks now prepare for four straight games with Weyburn. Friday and Saturday the Sharks will be in Weyburn and Feb. 12 and 13 the Gold Wings will be in the Battlefords.
Weyburn is 14-6-2-1 this season while the Sharks remain winless and are locked into the eighth spot in the Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League standings no whatever the results of their final five games are.
