HAFFORD — A 27-year-old man is recovering from a massive heart attack suffered after playing in a Sask West Hockey League game.
According to a statement by the Hafford Hawks posted on the SWHL website, Devin Gerun, is expected to recover and is working with a cardiologist after ending up in the Coronary Care Unit at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon.
The statement indicated that on Sunday, Feb. 19, the Edam/Hafford provincial team was playing in Leroy when Hafford forward Gerun started to feel unwell. He was taken to the dressing room by head coach Greg Gryzbowski during the first overtime, where Gryzbowski called 911.
Fortunately, EMT’s and an ambulance were stationed at the rink and Gerun, accompanied by Gryzbowski, was transported to the Humboldt hospital.
“It was at the hospital in Humboldt where Devin’s condition worsened, and he experienced a massive heart attack,” says the statement. “Devin received great care from the medical team in Humboldt and they were able to stabilize him enough to be transferred to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon where he received life-saving medical treatment.”
The statement goes on to say, “Devin will continue to work closely with his cardiologist, Dr. Orvold, as he begins his road to recovery, and his condition continues to improve day by day. Dr. Orvold is optimistic that Devin will have a successful recovery and continue to live a full life.”
Gerun and his family have expressed thanks to everyone involved in his care and saving his life: EMS, Humboldt Emergency, and RUH CCU.
The Hafford Hawks statement says, “Devin wants the public to understand the reality that heart disease can affect anyone at any age, but with routine screening and early intervention can prevent serious life-changing health challenges.”
The SWHL is a senior men hockey league consisting of teams located in west central Saskatchewan. This year, the SWHL consists of Wilkie, Unity, Macklin, Biggar, Edam, Hafford, Kerrobert and Kindersley.
