Theatre construction runs into delays

Financial problems with one of the sub-contractors has put construction of the theatre component of the CUPlex behind schedule.

Financial problems with one of the sub-contractors has put construction of the theatre component of the CUPlex behind schedule.

That report was provided by acting Parks and Recreation Director Keith Anderson during Monday night's regular city council meeting, following up on a Feb. 17 site meeting involving the general contractors and the representative from Barr Ryder architect.

The difficulties involve the erecting of steel for the theatre component, which is running behind schedule, he said.

The general contractor for that component, APM, had hired Quirion Metals as the steel supplier. Quirion, in turn, hired another subcontractor to erect the steel on the site.

"Basically there was some difficulties with a company that was hired to erect the steel," said Anderson.

Changes were made Feb. 21 with an additional crew brought in, but now "the company is no longer onsite due to some financial conditions within their own company," said Anderson.

A new company has since been taken on to erect the steel, confirms Anderson, who expressed confidence the delays are now behind them. The steel supplier subcontractor, Quirion, remains on the project.

He told reporters after Monday's meeting he believes some of the lost time on the project could be made up.

"I'm not sure they can make all of it up, but it's looking better, for sure," he said.

Anderson later told the Regional Optimist another site meeting was scheduled for Thursday, a meeting in which the new company was to be involved.

Anderson was much happier about the progress with the aquatics centre component, where he says construction is still very much on track. Jen-Col is the general contractor for that project.

"Their steel has arrived," said Anderson, and "they started putting it up, must have been late Saturday or early Sunday."

Already completed are the strip pool wall forms, the form wave chamber walls, the form suspended slab in the basement, patch tie holes in pool walls and the build ramp, among other items. As well, grade beams continue to be poured.
