LITTLE PINE FIRST NATION – A 49-year-old man is recovering after RCMP shot him early Saturday morning.
Between midnight and 1:30 a.m. Cut Knife RCMP got three separate calls about a man from Little Pine First Nation. The reports were of an assault, a firearm СÀ¶ÊÓƵ pointed at Little Pine Security members, and an abandoned 911 call of a man with a firearm thinking about suicide.
Just before 2 a.m., two Cut Knife RCMP officers encountered the man with a firearm outside a home on Little Pine First Nation. The police response involved the discharge of a firearm and the man was injured.
Officers provided first aid assistance to the man until EMS arrived and transported him to hospital for treatment of injuries. The injured man was treated and released from hospital a few hours later into police custody.
Police found a firearm at the scene. No police officers were physically injured.
The Saskatchewan RCMP has asked Saskatoon Police Service and the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team to conduct an independent, external investigation. The Saskatchewan RCMP has requested the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General appoint independent investigation observers, including one Indigenous observer.
Police say that as the circumstances don’t currently meet Privacy Act exemptions, such as no charges have been laid, the RCMP doesn’t have the authority to identify the man.
As this incident is now СÀ¶ÊÓƵ investigated externally, the Saskatchewan RCMP can’t release further information at this time.
