MEADOW LAKE – A 32-year-old Nipawin woman was sentenced to eight years in prison for the death of 43-year-old Kenneth Merasty.
Lucy Annelle Whitecap was sentenced Tuesday in Meadow Lake Provincial Court. Whitecap was charged with second-degree murder but pleaded guilty last month to the lesser charge of manslaughter in a joint submission by the Crown and defence. Whitecap was also banned from owning firearms for life and ordered to provide her DNA to the National DNA Data Bank.
Whitecap, and Conrad Joseph Jay Merasty, of Flying Dust First Nation were charged with Kenneth Merasty’s death after Meadow Lake RCMP responded to a report of a stabbing in a home on Deer Street in Flying Dust Frist Nation Feb. 9, 2021. Kenneth Merasty was found suffering from serious injuries and he was pronounced deceased a short time later.
In February, Conrad Merasty’s matter went to Battleford Court of Queen’s Bench after he elected to be tried by judge and jury. His matter will be brought before the court June 24.
