NIPAWIN — Sgt. Rob Cozine, the provincial RCMP police co-ordinator for the Citizens on Patrol Program (COPP), will be travelling to Nipawin to deliver a presentation regarding the forming of a COPP in Nipawin.

This is following an impromptu meeting at Nipawin’s town square in July which revealed interest in setting up a COPP to help prevent and reduce crime.

Barry Elliott, Nipawin’s administrator, said the town’s role is just to help the program thrive through promotion, coordination or opportunity to meet. The town wouldn’t be providing any direct resources such as vehicles to use or equipment.

The event will be at the Nipawin Evergreen Centre on Aug. 23 at 5:30 p.m.  Doors will open an half-hour before it begins.

The Citizens on Patrol Program is a community-led, police supported crime prevention, crime reduction program in Saskatchewan.

COPP works through unpaid volunteers having scheduled patrol routes where they patrol an area, communicating with an RCMP liaison. If they see something they deem suspicious they fill out a form on a COPP app to report it. When the liaison checks their own phone they will see the form and can investigate the report.
