LANIGAN — The new K-12 school in Lanigan will not have the accessibility challenges of its predecessors, said Kevin Garinger, Horizon School Division’s director of education.
Currently in the design phase, the two-story K-12 school is СƵ built to consolidate both the elementary and high school, accommodating up to 400-450 students.
Features planned include a multi-floor lift for students and staff to use as well as accessible gender neutral washroom availability.
“The high school was a significant challenge in terms of providing access, it didn’t have the ability or access like this school will to a lift,” Garinger said. “The elementary school did have a lift, but we’ve had significant challenges with that because it’s old.”
He said in the meantime, they’re making the two older schools “work” with alternatives available, but the new school will be an improvement.
“It’s really going to provide opportunities and ensure our children and staff for that matter will have access to any of the locations within the school. The doors will be built such that the accessibility issues are mitigated, so it will meet all the requirements even though it’s a couple of stories.”
The facility is planned to open in the 2023-24 school year.
