The first of six garbage cylinders was installed in Battle Springs park Wednesday afternoon as a new environment friendly in-ground waste management plan to keep the community fresh and clean.
Territory Manager, Laura Wittig, and Director of sales and marketing, David Fyfe, from Equinox Industries were at the park along with Mayor of Battleford, Chris Odishaw, to see the first ALFA garbage cylinder go into the ground.
These new garbage barrels are 8 feet tall with 6 feet in the ground. They were first tested in Finland and just started to become popular throughout Saskatchewan.
ALFA Products Inc. is constantly striving to deliver new methods for municipalities, organizations, and individuals to save time and money, while at the same time becoming more environmentally responsible.
Their products not only help to save natural resources, but they are manufactured in an environmentally responsible way, containing at least 50% recycled materials.
The Mayor of Battleford, Chris Odishaw, tested Equinox Industries' desert planters last year and the flowers did so well, while only having to water them twice a month, that he decided to give the garbage cylinders a try this summer.
"Keeping with our 'communities in bloom' initiative, these garbage barrels will be a great step in the right direction for the town of Battleford." Nobody wants a huge smelly trash can ruining the scenery of a beautiful park. The best part of these bins is that "They only need to be emptied once a month." explained Mayor Odishaw. This will provide better public access to waste removal while keeping parks nice and clean.
David Fyfe, Director of sales and marketing for Equinox Industries, said that the garbage system creates a much nicer environment by keeping the stale air inside and since the bin is locked, the sealed system will not attract any bugs or rodents. "These new garbage barrels are also vandal proof. A person would not be able to tip it over or start a fire inside."
When adding up the labour costs, the cylinders will pay for themselves after three years.
