NORTH BATTLEFORD – A 49-year-old man charged with child porn offences wants a trial by judge alone and a preliminary hearing.
Jason Schmidt appeared in person in North Battleford Provincial Court Tuesday and a preliminary hearing on a charge of making sexually explicit material available to a child was set for March 29, 2023. If the hearing determines there is enough evidence for him to stand trial the matter will be sent to Battleford Court of King's Bench.
Schmidt was arrested in December 2021 after what police described as a lengthy investigation into the possession of child pornography. North Battleford RCMP Municipal General Investigation Service said they started their investigation in July 2021 after they received a complaint of inappropriate communications СÀ¶ÊÓƵ found on a device that was СÀ¶ÊÓƵ used by a child. Police executed a search warrant at a home in North Battleford and arrested Schmidt.
The Saskatchewan Digital Forensic Services and the Saskatchewan Integrated Child Exploitation Unit assisted with the investigation.
The charge against Schmidt hasn’t been tested in court.
