Police had issued a SaskAlert warning the public that a dangerous man with a large axe or edged weapon was at large

MEADOW LAKE – A 29-year-old man accused of assaulting a 74-year-old senior before fleeing with an axe is fit to stand trial.

The trial for Jordan Andrew Scott Nelson will start in Meadow Lake Provincial Court Feb. 24.

A Mental Health Assessment (MHA) of Nelson was ordered last June. He was arrested March 11, 2021, after an incident the day prior.

According to Meadow Lake RCMP, at about 1:20 p.m. on March 10 they received a report of a serious assault in a rural area in the R. M. of Meadow Lake. The victim was taken to hospital in serious condition. Nelson allegedly fled the scene and within the hour police issued a SaskAlert warning the public that a dangerous man with a large axe or edged weapon was at large.

Officers from multiple detachments descended on the area to search for Nelson. He was arrested without incident in the100 block of Second Street East in Meadow Lake.

Police say the male victim and Nelson were known to each other.

Nelson was charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault with a weapon. He was denied bail and remains in custody.

The charges against Nelson haven't been proven in court.
