Melfort RCMP are encouraging residents to take steps to secure their property.

MELFORT — Noticing an increase in theft reports, the Melfort RCMP is asking the public to take action to protect their property.

“We don’t want anyone to fall victim to a crime of opportunity. Keeping spare change in your vehicle or other valuables can make it a possible target,” said Cpl. Kyle Wyonzek of the Melfort RCMP.

“Removing your garage door opener from your vehicle is also a good practice. If it is stolen, someone could have access to everything inside your garage or, potentially, your home.”

Police said they investigate each report received and are conducting regular patrols, but would like to remind the public to:

  • Never leave anything valuable in a vehicle. It’s not enough to hide valuables or keys in a cup holder, in the console or behind a visor
  • Remove garage door openers from vehicles
  • Keep all residential doors and windows, including garages and sheds, locked at all times
  • If possible, keep vehicles, off-road vehicles and trailers parked in a well-lit area
  • Take keys out of vehicles, off-road vehicles and farm equipment when not in use
  • Consider using a hitch lock
  • Write down serial numbers and take photos of your valuables in the event you need to make a report to police regarding it

If you have been the victim of theft, if you have information about a theft that has occurred or you see any suspicious activity, you can call the Melfort RCMP at 306-752-6420. Information can also be submitted anonymously through Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers by calling 1鈥800鈥222鈥怲IPS (8477) or .

RCMP said residents can also report certain crimes, including thefts under $5,000, conveniently and 24/7 through their .
