HUMBOLDT — A challenge among local businesses during December soon blossomed into a $2,300 donation to Partners Family Services.
It all started when the Humboldt branch of the Conexus Credit Union received $200, its share of a fund set to expire at the end of 2021, with the instruction to use it to better the community.
“I chatted with my team here and said, ‘what kind of impact can we create with $200? Let’s try to be creative and see what are some of the things we can do.’”
During a brainstorming session, somebody suggested challenging other local businesses. A letter was sent through the Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce’s email list on Dec. 15, with a deadline of Dec. 20.
“We thought if we get one or two businesses that pitch in, that’ll be a success,” Ward said, pointing out that there’s lots of projects happening during Christmas that local business are asked to contribute to.
“We had nine businesses.”
They were Thrive Wealth Management, Pure Essence Laser Hair Removal, Wheelers Wholesale, KMK Sales, Hergott Farm Equipment, Behiel Tax and Accounting, Olymel, the Humboldt Broncos, and Kal Tire.
“In doing that, for me, it just really indicates how interested our business community is in helping where they need to help.”
Originally, the money raised was to respond to Michael Behiel’s work to support an effort to provide a Christmas dinner for those that might not be able to do so otherwise. After talking with Behiel, the target switched to Partners, as they are in a position to determine if somebody needs a bit of help with something like groceries to get through the month.
With the money, gift cards were purchased from local businesses, then given to Partners, who will give the cards as needed.
