Johb urges SFL members to continue fighting for workers' rights

Johb is hoping the next provincial government will listen to workers.

SASKATOON—Lori Johb urges her fellow Saskatchewan Federation of Labour leaders and members to continue pushing for workers’ rights as the 2024 provincial elections end on Monday, Oct. 28.

“All of you here, and the signs are enough messages. I know that we need to do a couple of things. We need to ensure that after Monday, we have politicians who will listen to us,” said Johb, who will again lead the SFL in the next two years.

Johb has been affirmed during the third day of the SFL biennial convention on Friday, Oct. 26, at TCU Place. She is a healthcare worker and a Service Employees International Union-West member.

She hopes that the next government will think of the welfare of all workers in the province after Monday's election.

“We need leaders who will work with workers to make things better for us all. Regardless of who wins the election, although we have an idea of who we are hoping for, they must work and listen to working people. We need to demand that they do,” added Johb.

“Workers in every corner of this province feel the squeeze, and many are burnt out. For Pete’s sake—the least the next government could do for cash-strapped, exhausted workers is to make sure everyone comes home safe from work every day.”

Healthcare, education and the economy were some of the hot issues discussed in this election cycle as both the Saskatchewan Party and the Saskatchewan NDP delivered their plans to every door in the province if given the chance to form a government.

SFL Secretary-Treasurer Kent Peterson did not run for another term and will be replaced by Marilynne MacFarlane, who was elected on a contested ballot.

MacFarlane has a background in financial services and currently serves as the Secretary-Treasurer of UFCW 1400.

The next SFL Convention is scheduled for fall 2026 in Regina.
