HUMBOLDT — The Horizon School Division Board of Education has reviewed and approved the 2022-23 school year calendar, with classes starting Sept. 1.

In total, the year will have 178 instructional days. There are five personal professional days to allow teachers and support staff dedicated time to achieve tasks that would otherwise pose a challenge to accomplish within regular hours such as professional development or lesson plan preparation.

During this time there is no school for students, which are on Oct. 7, Jan. 6, Feb. 27, March 20 and May 18.

There will be three collaborative learning days for staff, where there will also not be school for students, on Aug. 29, Sept. 19 and Oct. 24.

According to the Horizon School Division, the decision for the give personal professional day were implemented this year after a review by Horizon’s board and senior leadership from feedback pertaining to its implementation in the 2021-22 school year.

“Our partnerships with the Horizon Teachers’ Association, CUPE, and our School Community Councils makes our calendar development and consultation processes very efficient, and direct survey feedback from our staff and families adds an important element to our planning,” said Kevin Garinger, Horizon’s director of education.

Horizon’s annual instructional time will remain above the ministry of education’s minimum threshold of 950 hours per year.
