Blaine Lake Community Association held its fifth annual Grandma and Grandpa Bonspiel on Feb. 6 with 10 rinks registered.

Rinks travelled from surrounding communities of Leask, Shell Lake, Shellbrook, Krydor and rural Blaine Lake to participate in the sport.

Each draw consisted of four ends permitting the bonspiel to be completed in one day. Curling is a physical sport that encourages both weight and cardio workouts.

In the A event, Chad Timm's rink of Denise Timm, and Lloyd and Emily Koolick defeated the Leask rink of Lloyd and Eileen Banda, Dennis Hamilton and Omer Bonin.

A Blaine Lake rink of Roy Pollard, Les Pollard and Barry and Darcy Glencross defeated Gord Melynk, Lloyd and Elaine Hunchak and Ed Thorsteinson to capture the B event title.

The C event draw went into a shootout with both skips throwing one rock each. The first attempt saw neither of the rocks remain in the house, the second shot saw Real Diehl draw closest to the button declaring victory over the John Priestley rink. Real Diehl's rink consisted of Don Boe, Elmer Boyer and Jack Popoff. John Priestley's rink consisted of Val Priestley, Carol Lafond and Doug Bergen.

It was a great day of fun, socializing and demonstration of great curling skills.

The next big bonspiel in Blaine Lake will be the week of Feb 21 with the popular Farmers' Spiel.
