Explosive devices found in rural mailboxes near Saskatoon

Police say nine mailboxes in the area have been damaged by fireworks.

SASKATOON AREA - Saskatoon RCMP are investigating after explosive devices were found in rural mailboxes in the area. They have determined the devices in the mailbox are modified fireworks.

Saskatoon RCMP received a report Sunday that several mailboxes near Sunset Estates in the RM of Blucher were broken into, and suspicious objects were left in them.

After investigating, police determined one of the mailboxes had been damaged by an explosive device.

Then, at about 9:50 a.m., Monday, Saskatoon RCMP received a separate report of an explosive device placed in a mailbox on Rural Road 3040, in the RM of Corman Park.

Police determined that seven explosive devices were placed in mailboxes in the area. Six of them detonated, damaging the mailboxes.

Two additional damaged mailboxes have now been located since the first news release went out. All involved mailboxes are east of Saskatoon in the RM of Blucher, and RM of Corman Park between Highway 16 and Highway 5.

No injuries have been reported.

Saskatchewan RCMP’s Explosive Disposal Unit is assisting with this ongoing investigation.

Police ask that residents not handle any suspicious or unknown devices found in mailboxes. If anyone finds one, or has any information about these incidents, they are asked to call Saskatoon RCMP at 310-RCMP or Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers.

The fireworks will not detonate, and thus are not a threat, unless they are lit.
